ARTstor -- click for info
ARTstor is a non-profit organization created by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
ARTstor has developed a digital library of images (including art, architecture
and archeology) and descriptive data. ARTstor also provides software tools to
enable active use of the images. The tools support a wide range of uses including
analyzing images, saving groups of images online, and creating and delivering
presentations both online and offline. This is a resource available only for
non-commercial, educational uses.
AP Images -- click for info
AP (Associated Press) Images provides photographs, audio sound bites,
graphics and text spanning over 160 years of history. It contains over one million
photographs dating back to 1826 and as current as a few moments ago, tens of
thousands of graphics, audio files dating from the 1920's, and news stories
dating from 1997.

Provides free online access to written and spoken words, sound recordings, still and moving images, prints, maps, and sheet music that document the American experience. Materials from the collections of the Library of Congress and other institutions chronicle historical events, people, places, and ideas that continue to shape America.
Brooklyn Museum of Art Digital Collections -- click for info
View over 12,000 images from the collection of the Brooklyn Museum of Art. The collection contains images that range from ancient to contemporary, and encompass virtually all of the world’s principal cultures. Many of the images can be downloaded for educational use.

- online catalog provides access to records from the Prints & Photographs Division of the Library of Congress
- many of the records include digital images, about one million in all
- information provided on downloading or obtaining copies from the Library's Photoduplication Service

LIFE Photo Archive hosted by Google -- click for info
Contains "millions of photographs from the LIFE photo archive, stretching from the 1750s to today. Most were never published and are now available for the first time through the joint work of LIFE and Google."
New York Public Library Digital Gallery -- click for info
NYPL Digital Gallery provides access to over 275,000 images
digitized from primary sources and printed rarities in the collections of The
New York Public Library, including illuminated manuscripts, historical maps,
vintage posters, rare prints and photographs, illustrated books, printed ephemera and more.
OAIster -- click for info
- union catalog of digital resources created by the University of Michigan
- provides access to records and files of digital images, audio and video from 900 contributing institutions
- users can search by TITLE, CREATOR or SUBJECT
- Most of the images are freely available for educational use

Philadelphia Historical Digital Image Library -- click for info
PHDIL, the Philadelphia Historical Digital Image Library, is a grant-funded
collaborative effort between the Scott Memorial Library of Thomas Jefferson
University and The Historical Society of Pennsylvania, containing over 3,000
images of a variety of photographs, art works, and portraits. The collection
includes pre-1945 portraits of alumni, faculty, and trustees; scenes from
hospitals; views of 19th and early 20th century anatomy/dissection labs, and
nurses in practice. Also included are views of everyday life in
Philadelphia at the turn of the century, and a number of Benjamin Ridgeway
Evans watercolor drawings of Philadelphia buildings and streetscapes during
the mid 19th century.
