Biographical and Historical Notes

A part of the University of the Arts Division of Continuing Studies since 2012, the Continuing Education program offers seminars, classes, workshops focusing on the arts, humanities, and technology to part-time adult students seeking professional development or personal enrichment. In addition to offering college credits for courses, Continuing Education also has a number of certificate programs in such subjects as Music Business, Entrepreneurship + Technology, Web Design, Digital Photography, and others. Although most classes and workshops are held on campus, over the years a number of extension programs have been offered in locations in the surrounding PA and NJ suburbs.

Programming for adult, non-traditional students has been offered by the University since its founding as the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art. With courses offered in the evenings to accommodate students’ work schedules, programming was known as the Evening School, and, later, the Evening Division until the summer of 1980, at which time its name was changed to Continuing Studies of the Philadelphia College of Art. According to the Summer 1980 Continuing Studies course catalog, the name change was to reflect the recent expansion of program offerings, which included day and weekend courses, and intensive workshops, begun in order to meet increasing demand.

In 1985 the Philadelphia College of Art merged with the Philadelphia College of Performing Arts (PCPA, now the UArts College of Performing Arts) to form the Philadelphia Colleges of the Arts and, in 1987, the University of the Arts. Upon the merger, the Office for Continuing Studies moved its offices to the Shubert Theater Building (now the Merriam) and formed a partnership with the PCPA’s Dance Extension Program. However, the Continuing Studies Office (known as the Continuing Education Office after 1986) remained largely separate from the PCPA, which continued its own continuing education program, the New Studies Center, until 1992. The program also had partnerships extending outside the University. From 1989 to 1991 the University of the Arts began a partnership with the Springside School in Chestnut Hill to offer courses in studio art and the humanities at the Springside School’s McNeil Center for the Arts. Although Continuing Education was primarily focused on adult education, it did provide some programming for high school juniors and seniors through the summer New Talent program, which would become a part of the Pre-College Summer Institute in 1991, and later known as both the Visual Arts Exploration Program and the Art Smart Program.

In 1992 the PCPA New Studies Center and the PCAD Continuing Education Office merged to form the Center for Continuing Studies. The new center included two distinct programs-- Continuing Education, which was offered courses in the arts and humanities for adults, and the Professional Institute for Educators (PIE), which had previously been a part of PCPA’s New Studies Center. In late 2008, the University’s weekend and summer programs for children and teenagers merged with the Center to create the Division of Continuing Studies. These programs include the Saturday Lab School, the Saturday School, and the Pre-College Summer Institute, and would officially be known as the Pre-College Programs. Along with PIE and, by 2013, the MEd and graduate certificate programs, Continuing Education would make up the Division’s Professional + Adult Programs.
